Camellia is native to China. Likes warm, humid and semi-shady environments. Afraid of high temperature, avoid scorching sun. There are wild species in Sichuan, Taiwan, Shandong, Jiangxi and other places in China. Widely cultivated in various places, camellia has a wide variety of flowers, most of which are red or light red, and some are white, mostly double petals.
The optimum temperature for the growth of camellia is 18-25°C, 13-18°C from March to September, and 10-13°C from September to March of the following year. When the temperature is above 12°C, germination begins, and when the temperature is above 30°C, the growth stops. The initial flower temperature is 2°C, and the temperature suitable for flower opening is 10-20°C. The cold-resistant varieties of camellia can withstand -10°C for a short time, and the general varieties are -3--4°C. In summer, the temperature exceeds 35 ℃, and leaf burns will occur. Camellia is suitable for an environment with sufficient water and humid air, and avoid drying. In hot and dry summer and autumn, watering or spraying should be done in time, and the relative humidity of the air should be 70%-80%. During the rainy season, pay attention to drainage, so as not to cause the roots to suffer from waterlogging and rot.
Camellia is a semi-shade plant, suitable for growth in scattered light, afraid of direct light exposure, seedlings need shade. However, long-term overcast is unfavorable to the growth of camellia, with thin leaves and less flowering, which affects the ornamental value. Adult plants need more light to facilitate the formation and flowering of flower buds.
For open field cultivation, choose a deep, loose soil layer with good drainage, pH 5-6 is the most suitable, and alkaline soil is not suitable for camellia growth. Use fertile loose, slightly acidic loam or humus soil for potting soil
